Porto offers a similar quality of life at 20–30% lower cost, with a more local, less touristy feel. The Algarve is where retirees land — beaches, golf, and a slower pace. International schools are concentrated in Lisbon and Porto, ranging €8,000–18,000/year. Outside those cities, options thin out quickly. Public schools teach in Portuguese, and the language is harder to pick up than Spanish — but English is widely spoken in Lisbon and tourist areas, making the first year manageable.
