Visa requirements
Spain, Portugal, and Netherlands — thresholds, rules, timelines
Spain Digital Nomad Visa
The income requirement is 200% of Spain's minimum wage (SMI). As of 2026, the SMI is €1,221/month in 14 payments (set by Royal Decree 126/2026, published February 18, 2026, retroactive to January 1). When converted to a 12-payment equivalent for foreigners, the DNV income threshold is approximately €2,849/month (~$3,080 USD). For a spouse, add 75% of the annualized SMI (€1,069/month). For each child, add 25% (€357/month). Note: Spain immigration uses the annualized monthly equivalent (€1,221 × 14 ÷ 12 = €1,424.50), not the raw monthly SMI. These are gross income figures, before taxes.
Yes, W-2 employees have been approved since April 2025, but it's not guaranteed. A critical requirement is the Social Security Certificate of Coverage, which your employer must obtain from the SSA. The SSA may not issue this certificate specifically for DNV purposes — this is a known gray area. We strongly recommend confirming with your employer and the SSA before purchasing. Some W-2 employees switch to independent contractor status to avoid this issue.
Not necessarily. You need one of the following: a university degree, a professional certification relevant to your field, or at least 3 years of professional experience in your field. If qualifying through experience, you'll need documentation such as employer letters, employment contracts, or official employment history records to prove it.
Both routes exist. The consulate route means applying from the US through the Spanish consulate with jurisdiction over your state (not through BLS — BLS handles Schengen short-stay visas only). The in-country route (UGE) means entering Spain on a tourist waiver and applying from within Spain. Each route has different trade-offs regarding timeline, risk, and family logistics. Our wizard currently supports the consulate route, with in-country (UGE) support coming soon.
Spain's Beckham Law (formally the "special expat tax regime") offers a 24% flat tax rate on Spanish-sourced income for up to 6 years, instead of Spain's progressive rates that can reach 47%. DNV holders may qualify if they haven't been Spanish tax residents in the prior 5 years. This is a significant financial benefit worth discussing with a tax advisor familiar with both Spanish and US tax obligations.
Processing times vary by consulate and application route. Generally, expect 1–3 months from submission to decision for the consulate route. The in-country (UGE) route is often faster end-to-end since you avoid consulate appointment wait times. Factor in additional time before submission for gathering documents — apostilles, translations, background checks, and employer letters each have their own lead times. Our platform generates a personalized timeline based on your situation.
Portugal D8 Digital Nomad Visa
The income requirement is 4× Portugal's minimum wage. As of 2026, Portugal's minimum wage is €920/month (effective January 1, 2026). That means the D8 threshold is €3,680/month (~$3,975 USD) for a solo applicant. For a spouse, add 50% of the minimum wage (+€460/month). Per child, add 30% (+€276/month). You must also show savings of at least €11,040 (12× minimum wage) in a Portuguese bank account, with additional amounts for dependents.
Yes — and this is one of the trickiest parts. You need a NIF (Portuguese tax number) to open a Portuguese bank account, and you need the bank account to show the required savings. The sequencing is: get your NIF first (this can be done remotely through a fiscal representative or agency), then open the bank account, then deposit the required savings. Our platform walks you through this sequence step by step.
US applicants typically apply through VFS Global centers. Some locations (Boston, Newark, New Bedford, Providence) are consulates that may accept direct submission. Our platform routes you to the correct submission location based on your state. You cannot apply from within Portugal. Appointment availability varies, so book as early as possible.
Approval gives you a 4-month entry visa to enter Portugal. Once in Portugal, you must schedule an appointment with AIMA (Agência para a Integração, Migrações e Asilo) to convert your visa into a 2-year residence permit. AIMA processing delays are well-documented — waits of several months are common. This is outside anyone's control, but your visa status remains valid while you wait. Our platform prepares you for what to expect during this period.
The D7 is for passive income (pensions, dividends, rental income, royalties) with a lower threshold of €920/month. The D8 is for active remote work income with a threshold of €3,680/month. If your primary income comes from remote employment or freelancing, you need the D8. If you're retired or live on passive income, the D7 is your path. D7 holders can work in Portugal after receiving their residence permit; D8 holders must maintain foreign income sources.
Netherlands DAFT
The Dutch American Friendship Treaty (DAFT) is a bilateral agreement between the US and the Netherlands that allows American citizens to obtain a residence permit for self-employment. It's one of the most accessible pathways for Americans to live in Europe — you don't need a Dutch employer, language proficiency, or advanced degrees. You need to register a business in the Netherlands and deposit €4,500 in a Dutch business bank account.
The €4,500 is business capital that must be deposited in a Dutch business bank account and maintained permanently — it's not a one-time payment you get back. If the balance drops below €4,500 at any point, your visa renewal may be rejected. The IND can request bank statements at renewal to verify this. Budget an additional ~€500 for a Dutch accountant to prepare the required opening balance sheet.
IND application fee: €423 for the main applicant, €254 for a spouse/partner, €85 per child. KvK (Chamber of Commerce) business registration: €85.15. Accountant for opening balance sheet: approximately €500. Total for a solo applicant: roughly €1,008 in government and professional fees, plus the €4,500 deposit.
Yes — and this is a significant advantage. Your spouse/partner receives work rights and can work regular jobs for Dutch employers. This is broader than the DAFT holder's rights (the main applicant must remain self-employed). Note that family members receive full work rights after the final residence permit is issued, not with the initial endorsement sticker.
Most Americans enter the Netherlands visa-free on a 90-day tourist entry, then apply from within the country. The process typically follows a hybrid pattern: mail Form 7524 to IND shortly after arrival via registered mail (aangetekend) → receive a V-number by post (~1 week) → book IND biometrics appointment → receive residence endorsement sticker (verblijfssticker) in passport → register at Gemeente for BSN → apply for DigiD → open business bank account + deposit €4,500 → register at KvK → have accountant prepare opening balance sheet → upload remaining documents (bank statement, KvK extract, balance sheet) via the My IND portal. The IND is currently processing DAFT applications in approximately 6–8 weeks under an expedited pilot program, though this may change. IND procedures can change — verify current requirements at ind.nl.
