How Do You Enroll Kids in School in Spain on a Digital Nomad Visa?

September 14, 202611 min readLast verified September 2026

School in Spain is compulsory from 6 to 16 (Ley Orgánica 2/2006, Article 4), and Ley Orgánica 4/2000, Article 9, gives every foreign child under 16 a free place. Register on the padrón, then apply in the March window or, arriving later, through escolarización fuera de plazo.

So no, landing in August does not mean you missed it. Spain's admissions system has a separate channel for families who arrive after the spring round, and it runs all year. What you give up by arriving late is choice, not a seat. Here is the national sequence, how it plays out in Madrid, Andalucía and Catalonia, and what to pack from your kids' US school file.

Does Your Child Need a TIE Before Enrolling?

No. The right to school is not tied to your residence card. Article 9 of Ley Orgánica 4/2000 gives foreign minors under 16 the right and the duty to free, compulsory basic education, and it does not make that conditional on residence status. Minors under 18 also have the right to post-compulsory education.

In practice that means you don't wait for fingerprints. Your family applies for TIE cards within 30 days of arrival and registers on the padrón at the ayuntamiento. School enrollment can run alongside both. What schools do care about is your address, because it drives which school gets you.

If you are still sorting out who is on the visa, our Spain Digital Nomad Visa guide covers family members. In 2026 the income requirement rises by €1,069/month for the first dependent and €357/month for each additional one, on top of the €2,849/month base.

What Is the Enrollment Sequence for a US Family?

The order is the same everywhere in Spain. Only the office names change by region.

Step When What happens
1. Visa approved Before you fly Children are included as family members on the DNV
2. Rent a home First days Sign a lease where you want the kids to go to school
3. Padrón First weeks Register the whole family at the ayuntamiento and get a volante or certificado de empadronamiento
4. Apply for a place Spring window, or fuera de plazo if later Apply to schools directly or through the regional placement office
5. Place assigned Days to weeks A school with vacancies is assigned; you complete matrícula at that school
6. TIE Within 30 days of arrival Runs in parallel; does not block school

Our padrón guide walks through the town hall appointment. The short version: register at the address you actually live at. Proximity of the family home to the school is an admission criterion (Madrid lists it next to siblings already at the school), so a padrón at a short-term rental points the system at that neighborhood.

When Is the School Admissions Window in Spain?

Each autonomous community sets its own dates, but they cluster in March. These are the ordinary windows for the 2026-2027 school year:

Region Ordinary application window (2026-27) Out-of-period route
Comunidad de Madrid March 11 to 25, 2026 A school with vacancies or the district Servicio de Apoyo a la Escolarización (SAE)
Andalucía March 1 to 31, 2026 Anexo IX at the school; the comisión territorial de garantías de admisión assigns
Catalonia March 4 to 18, 2026 Admissió fora del procés de preinscripció, via the Oficina Municipal d'Escolarització (OME)

The school year itself starts in early September. In Madrid, 2026-27 classes begin on September 7, 2026 for Infantil and Primaria and September 8 for ESO and Bachillerato, and run to June 18, 2027 (Orden 2034/2026). Other regions shift these by a few days.

How Does Out-of-Period Enrollment Work?

Families who arrive after the spring round apply through a separate channel called fuera de plazo. A regional placement body assigns a place at a school that still has room. You can name preferences, but the place goes where the vacancies are.

Madrid: Out-of-period applications go either to a school that still has vacancies or to the district Servicio de Apoyo a la Escolarización (SAE), before or after term starts. For 2026-27 the extraordinary process opened on June 25 for Infantil and Primaria and July 3 for ESO and Bachillerato.

Andalucía: You submit Anexo IX to the school with your supporting documents. Applying late means you lose priority, and the comisión territorial de garantías de admisión decides which school your child is assigned to.

Catalonia: The Generalitat's out-of-period procedure is open all year except during the preinscripció itself. You can apply online or in person at the Oficina Municipal d'Escolarització, whose job includes assigning places outside the ordinary period. The territorial commission weighs available places, your preferences and a balanced distribution of students, then emails you the result.

Here's the honest reframe: the placement office isn't a penalty box for late families. It exists because Spanish families move mid-year too. What you give up is picking the exact school in the first round. Some families take the assigned place for year one and apply in the next March window for the school they want.

What Documents Do You Need to Enroll?

Requirements vary by region, and Spanish offices rarely publish one clean national checklist. Across the official regional pages and families' accounts of Madrid and Málaga, these come up consistently:

  • Child's passport (Catalonia asks non-Spanish nationals for a passport)
  • Birth certificate or libro de familia to show the parent-child relationship
  • Padrón: a volante or certificado de empadronamiento at your Spanish address
  • Vaccination record: bring your state immunization record; schools commonly ask for it
  • Previous school records: report cards and transcripts from the US school
  • The region's application form (Anexo IX in Andalucía, for example)

US-specific tip: Get your children's birth certificates apostilled by the competent authority in the state of birth (usually the Secretary of State) before you fly. Our state-by-state apostille guide covers where to send them. Translations may also be requested if documents are not in Spanish.

If your child has an IEP or a 504 plan, bring it. Spain does not adopt US plans directly. For students with special educational needs, Madrid's admissions process relies on its own psychopedagogical evaluation, and the US paperwork gives the evaluators a head start.

What Grade Will Your Child Be Placed In?

Placement goes by calendar year of birth, not a September 1 cutoff. Under Real Decreto 157/2022, Article 5.2, children start 1º de Primaria in the calendar year they turn six.

That catches US parents off guard. A child born in October 2020 would be in kindergarten in most US districts in 2026-27. In Spain, the same child starts 1º de Primaria in September 2026, because 2026 is the year they turn six. Congratulations, your kindergartner just skipped a grade. On paper, anyway.

The Ministry of Education's equivalence table for the United States maps grades one to one:

US grade Spanish course Paperwork needed
Grades 1 to 6 1º to 6º de Primaria None
Grades 7 to 9 1º to 3º de ESO None
Grade 10 4º de ESO None to enroll in 4º ESO; homologación to the Graduado en ESO title if completed
Grade 11 1º de Bachillerato Convalidación of 1º Bachillerato (fee applies)
Grade 12 / High School Diploma 2º de Bachillerato / Título de Bachiller Homologación to the Título de Bachiller (fee applies)

For children arriving mid-stream, Real Decreto 157/2022, Article 19, tells schools to weigh the child's circumstances, knowledge, age and academic history. In primary, a child with a curricular gap of one cycle or more can be placed one course below their age group, with support to catch up (RD 157/2022, Art. 19.2). In ESO the threshold is a gap of two or more years (Real Decreto 217/2022, Art. 22). A child whose only gap is Spanish is normally placed with their age group.

Do US School Records Need Homologación or Convalidación?

Not for most kids. The Ministry states that entry into any course of Primaria or ESO happens by age, directly at the school, with no convalidación procedure. Its US table sets that line at 4º de ESO inclusive.

The paperwork starts with teenagers entering Bachillerato:

  • Entering 1º de Bachillerato after finishing US grade 10: homologación of the grade 10 studies to the Graduado en ESO title. The Ministry lists no fee for this one.
  • Entering 2º de Bachillerato after US grade 11: convalidación of 1º de Bachillerato, with a fee (tasa 079, paid on modelo 790).
  • Finishing high school: the High School Diploma is homologated to the Título de Bachiller, also with a fee. A GED is not homologated to Bachillerato.

For US applicants, transcripts must show passing grades in every subject of the grades being recognized. They must carry a Hague Apostille and an official Spanish translation, for example by a traductor jurado. Because the procedure takes time, you can file a volante de inscripción condicional with your application. It lets your teen enroll conditionally while the file is pending. It does not guarantee a favorable result.

Timing tip: request apostilled transcripts from your US high school before you leave. Once you're in Valencia, "can you mail me a notarized transcript?" is a much longer email thread.

Public, Concertado or International School?

Spain has three tiers, and the rules above apply fully to the first two.

Type Cost Admission route Language
Público Tuition-free Regional admissions, including fuera de plazo Spanish (plus co-official language in some regions)
Concertado Tuition-free by law; comedor and extras are paid Same regional admissions process Spanish, often with bilingual programs
Privado / international Fee-paying, set by each school Applied to directly Often English, US, British or IB curriculum

Concertado schools are privately run but publicly funded. Article 88 of Ley Orgánica 2/2006 says they cannot charge families for the free instruction or make "voluntary" contributions to a foundation compulsory. In practice, many still ask for contributions, and lunch, extracurriculars and uniforms are billed. Ask each school for the full annual cost in writing.

International schools teaching a foreign curriculum operate under Real Decreto 806/1993. One practical catch: under Article 8, studies at those schools are recognized through the same homologación and convalidación rules as studies abroad. A teenager who moves from an American-curriculum school into Spanish Bachillerato goes through the same file described above. For a wider look at the trade-offs, see our guide to raising kids in Europe versus America.

The specific delight of the public route is that after a few awkward months, your eight-year-old will correct your pronunciation at the panadería. Many families find the school day also reshapes everyone else's: a walk to school, a proper lunch, and a plaza full of classmates at 7pm on a school night.

What Should You Do Before You Leave the US?

Most of this is just collecting paper while you still have easy access to US offices.

  • Apostille birth certificates for every child, from the state where each was born.
  • Request records from your US school: final report cards, and for grades 10 and up, official transcripts with an apostille.
  • Print the state immunization record from your pediatrician or state registry.
  • Pick a neighborhood first, because the padrón address steers placement.
  • Email the placement office (SAE in Madrid, OME in Catalonia, the school or Delegación in Andalucía) in August with your expected arrival date.

If your spouse is also job-hunting, our post on Spain Digital Nomad Visa spouse work rights covers what the family permit allows. And once the visa is approved, the first-steps checklist puts the padrón and TIE appointments in order.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can my child enroll in a Spanish public school before we have a TIE?

Yes. Ley Orgánica 4/2000, Article 9, gives every foreign child under 16 the right to free compulsory education, regardless of residence status. Schools and placement offices mainly need your padrón, the child's passport and a birth certificate or libro de familia.

We arrive in Spain in August. Did we miss school enrollment?

No. The ordinary 2026-27 windows closed in March 2026 (for example, March 11 to 25 in Madrid), but out-of-period enrollment (fuera de plazo) is open to late arrivals. In Madrid the SAE assigns a school with vacancies; in Catalonia the OME does; in Andalucía the comisión territorial de garantías de admisión does.

What age does compulsory school start in Spain?

Compulsory school covers the ten years from age 6 to 16. Children start 1º de Primaria in the calendar year they turn six, so a child born anytime in 2020 starts in September 2026. Educación Infantil for ages 3 to 6 is voluntary.

Do American school records need to be validated to enroll in Spain?

Not up to and including 4º de ESO, the equivalent of US grade 10; placement is done by age at the school. Recognition is needed for 1º de Bachillerato (homologación of grade 10 to the Graduado en ESO title), 2º de Bachillerato (convalidación of grade 11) and the Título de Bachiller (High School Diploma). Those files need apostilled, officially translated transcripts.

Are concertado schools free in Spain?

The teaching is free by law under Article 88 of Ley Orgánica 2/2006, and schools cannot make contributions compulsory. Families typically still pay for the comedor, extracurricular activities, uniforms and materials. Many concertados also request voluntary contributions, so ask for the full annual cost in writing.

Can we choose which school our child attends if we enroll late?

You can list preferences, but out-of-period places go to schools that still have vacancies. Proximity to your padrón address and siblings already at a school are standard criteria in the spring round. Some families accept the assigned place for the first year and reapply in the following March window.
