Should You Ship Your Car from the US to Spain or Sell It?

September 14, 202611 min readLast verified September 2026

For most Americans, selling is likely the better deal. Spain's Traslado de Residencia relief lets a car you've used for at least 6 months enter free of import duty, 21% IVA and the IEDMT registration tax. Shipping ($1,250 to $3,800), homologation (from about €1,200) and a Spanish driving test still apply.

The paid-off car in the driveway feels like the one big thing you get to keep. No monthly payment, you know every rattle, and selling it for what a dealer offers feels like losing money twice. That instinct is worth taking seriously, and it's also worth running the numbers, because the tax side of bringing a car to Spain is far friendlier than most forums suggest. It's the engineering and the paperwork that tip the scale.

This is the sequel to our guide on shipping your belongings from the US to Spain. Same customs relief, very different math.

Can You Bring a US Car to Spain Tax-Free?

Yes, if you meet the residence-transfer conditions. Three taxes are waived together: EU customs duty, Spanish import IVA (21%) and the Impuesto Especial sobre Determinados Medios de Transporte (IEDMT), Spain's one-time registration tax. The conditions come from the Agencia Tributaria's customs rules and Article 66.1.n of Ley 38/1992.

Condition Rule (verified September 2026)
Time living outside the EU/Spain At least 12 consecutive months before the move
How long you've used the car At least 6 months at your former residence before leaving
How you bought it Under normal tax conditions in the US (sales tax paid, no export refund)
Customs deadline Import within 12 months of establishing residence in Spain
Registration deadline Apply to register within 60 days of starting to use the car in Spain
After import For 12 months after the customs declaration, no lending, renting or transferring without first telling customs. For IEDMT purposes, no transferring for 12 months after registration

A few US-specific notes on that table:

  • The clock is use, not the title date. Both the Agencia Tributaria and Ley 38/1992 require the car to have been used at your old residence for 6 months. A car bought three months before your consulate appointment doesn't qualify, however clean the title.
  • Early import is possible. Customs allows you to import before you move if you commit to establishing residence within the following 6 months, and a guarantee may be required.
  • Proof of residence matters. Customs asks for your municipal registration date, which is your empadronamiento, plus evidence of 12 months' residence outside the EU and an ownership document showing the acquisition date.
  • The IEDMT exemption is claimed on Modelo 06, exemption code ET4. The Agencia Tributaria's instructions list a certificate of 12 consecutive months' residence abroad from the competent consular authority, plus the purchase invoice. Ask your Spanish consulate about that certificate while you're still in the US.
  • Breaking the 12-month rule is costly. Sell the car within 12 months of registration and Ley 38/1992 makes the registration tax payable from the date you sold.

In other words, the tax man is not the villain of this story. The villain is a red rear turn signal.

What Would You Pay Without the Relief?

The exemptions are worth real money, so it helps to see what they cancel. These are the charges on a car that doesn't qualify, for example one bought too recently.

Charge 2026 rate
EU customs duty 10% standard rate on passenger cars. 0% if the car is of US origin, under Regulation (EU) 2026/1455, from 1 July 2026 until 31 December 2029
Import IVA 21%, typically calculated on the car's value plus shipping, insurance and duty
IEDMT, CO2 up to 120 g/km 0%
IEDMT, over 120 and under 160 g/km 4.75%
IEDMT, 160 to under 200 g/km 9.75%
IEDMT, 200 g/km or more 14.75%

Those IEDMT rates apply on the mainland and the Balearic Islands; the Canary Islands run one point lower. Each autonomous community can raise them by up to 15%. For a used car, the tax is charged on market value. One detail matters for American cars in particular: Ley 38/1992 puts any vehicle whose official CO2 emissions aren't documented in the top 14.75% band, so ask your homologation lab how your car's emissions figure will be recorded.

The US-origin duty cut only helps if you can prove where the car was built. The regulation uses the EU's non-preferential origin rules, and the importer carries the burden of proof. A car bought in Ohio isn't automatically a US-origin car. Where it was assembled is what counts.

An illustrative example: a non-US-built car with a €25,000 market value, €2,000 in shipping and insurance, and no documented CO2 figure. Duty is roughly €2,700, IVA roughly €6,240 and IEDMT roughly €3,690, for about €12,600 before a single light bulb is changed. With the residence relief, those three lines drop to zero. That's why the 6-month clock is the first thing to check.

Why Does a US-Spec Car Need Homologation?

American cars are built to US federal safety standards, not EU type approval, so they arrive without the EU Certificate of Conformity (CoC) that makes registration easy. Before Spain's DGT will issue plates, the car has to pass an ITV (Spain's vehicle inspection) using a technical data sheet for that exact vehicle, the ficha reducida.

Here the sources don't fully agree, and it's worth knowing both views before you book a ship:

  • The decree text. Real Decreto 750/2010 includes a route for privately used cars that were registered outside the EU to a person moving their residence to Spain. That person can register the car in their own name after an individual ITV inspection (inspección técnica unitaria) with a ficha reducida and the original title. The decree adds that such vehicles may exceptionally lack a homologation number.
  • What a lab quotes. One accredited homologation lab we checked (HomologaTotal) says practically no American car has a European homologation code, so most go through a full homologación individual. It quotes from about €1,200 for that plus €300 to €800 in adaptations. Its all-in estimate of €3,500 to €8,000+ (excluding transport) also counts import duty, 21% IVA and the IEDMT, which the residence relief waives for people who qualify.

The adaptations that lab lists are these:

  • Amber rear turn signals, separate from the brake lights. Many US cars flash red.
  • At least one rear fog light.
  • White front position lights, not amber.
  • A speedometer that reads km/h.

Some older models, or cars without EU-equivalent emissions data, may not be registrable at all. Before you spend anything on shipping, send an accredited lab your VIN and get a written quote.

Once the car lands, the sequence runs like this:

  1. The customs declaration (DUA) at the port.
  2. Homologation and adaptations with an accredited lab.
  3. The ITV inspection.
  4. Modelo 06 to claim the IEDMT exemption, or Modelo 576 if you're paying the tax.
  5. A DGT appointment with sworn Spanish translations of your documents.
  6. Spanish plates.

After that comes the distintivo ambiental, the €5 environmental sticker assigned from the car's registration data (fuel type and emissions standard). Under Ley 7/2021, every municipality over 50,000 residents must create a Zona de Bajas Emisiones (ZBE), so the category your car lands in decides where you can drive it. Ask the lab which label your car would get before you ship it.

What Has to Happen Before the Car Leaves the US?

US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) needs the paperwork before the ship sails, and any lender or lessor has to sign off.

  • Title: the original Certificate of Title (or a certified copy) plus two complete copies, presented with the vehicle at least 72 hours before export.
  • Loans and leases: if a bank holds a lien or the car is leased, CBP requires a letter on the lienholder's or lessor's letterhead that expressly permits export, with the VIN and an original signature. Many lease contracts restrict taking the car out of the country, so read yours first. For many leased cars, this is likely where the Spain plan ends.
  • Personal items: RoRo (roll-on/roll-off) ships don't allow belongings inside the car. With a container, ask your shipper whether items can travel with the car and how to declare them.
Route (2026 quotes) Method Price before destination fees Transit
New York to Valencia Container ~$1,250 24 to 30 days
Florida to Valencia Container ~$2,575 ~22 days
California to Valencia Container ~$3,800 ~50 days
East Coast, Gulf or West Coast to Valencia, Barcelona or Bilbao RoRo ~$1,400 to $2,900 planning range Varies by sailing

Budget roughly $500 to $800 more for port handling and customs clearance in Spain. These are shipper quotes, not fixed prices. Treat them as a starting point and get two or three live quotes.

Can You Drive in Spain on Your US License?

For a while. The DGT recognizes a non-EU license for up to 6 months from the date you become a resident, as long as you carry an official translation or an International Driving Permit. After that, your US license is no longer valid for driving in Spain.

The United States, and every individual US state, is missing from the DGT's list of countries whose licenses can be exchanged. That means no swap at the counter. Americans who want to keep driving enroll at an autoescuela and pass the same theory and practical exams as any Spanish learner.

Here's the honest reframe: the license question is the same whether you ship, sell or buy locally. And in the Spanish cities most Americans choose, daily life needs a car far less than a US suburb does. The bakery, the pharmacy and the school are often a walk away, and the evening paseo is something you do on foot. Plenty of families find they want a car for weekend trips to the coast, not for the Tuesday grocery run. Our guide to the best cities in Spain for Americans is a good place to see how walkable your shortlist is.

Ship, Sell or Buy in Spain: Which Makes Sense?

Put the answers from each section above into one decision fork.

Your situation Likely best move
Leased, or a loan you can't clear before export Sell (or return the lease)
Owned or used less than 6 months before you move Sell. Without the relief, taxes alone can run into five figures
Average-value sedan or SUV, city living Sell, then decide on a car in Spain after you've settled
US-built, owned 6+ months, lab confirms homologation is feasible, and you're rural or car-dependent Ship can make sense
Classic, specialty or sentimental car Ship, after a written lab quote
You'll want a car only after you've settled Buy in Spain: EU-spec, CoC on file, environmental label already assigned

Selling also simplifies your last month in the US. Handle the title transfer, plates and insurance cancellation under your state DMV's rules, and put the proceeds into the first months of Spanish rent. If a house sale is part of the same move, our guide to selling your US house before moving to Spain covers the timing, and the first steps after your Spain visa is approved shows where registration fits.

The car can wait until you're settled. The visa comes first. If you haven't confirmed which Spanish visa fits your income and work setup, our free assessment takes a few minutes and won't email you 47 times afterward.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you pay import tax to bring a car from the US to Spain?

Not if you qualify for the residence-transfer relief: 12 consecutive months living outside the EU and at least 6 months of using the car before you move. Customs duty, 21% IVA and the IEDMT registration tax are then all waived. Without the relief you pay IVA and IEDMT, plus 10% duty unless the car is US-built (0% from 1 July 2026 under Regulation (EU) 2026/1455).

How long must you own a car before shipping it to Spain duty-free?

The official requirement is at least 6 months of use at your former residence before you leave. You must also import it within 12 months of establishing Spanish residence. For 12 months after the customs declaration you can't lend, rent or transfer it without first telling customs, and selling it within 12 months of registration makes the IEDMT payable.

How much does it cost to ship a car from the US to Spain?

2026 shipper quotes range from about $1,250 by container from New York to Valencia to about $3,800 from California. RoRo planning ranges run roughly $1,400 to $2,900. Add about $500 to $800 for Spanish port handling and customs clearance, plus homologation from around €1,200 and adaptations of €300 to €800. One lab's all-in estimate of €3,500 to €8,000+ (excluding transport) also includes duty, IVA and IEDMT, which qualifying movers don't pay.

Can you exchange a US driver's license in Spain?

No. The US and its states are not on the DGT's exchange list. A US license is valid for up to 6 months after you become a Spanish resident, and after that you need a Spanish license through the theory and practical exams.

Can you take a leased car from the US to Spain?

Usually not in practice. CBP requires a letter on the lessor's letterhead that expressly permits export, and many lease contracts restrict taking the car abroad. For most people with a lease, returning or selling the car before moving is simpler.

What is Spain's IEDMT registration tax rate?

On the mainland and in the Balearic Islands, the rates are 0% up to 120 g/km of CO2, 4.75% below 160 g/km, 9.75% below 200 g/km and 14.75% at 200 g/km or more. A car with no officially documented CO2 figure falls into the 14.75% band. People moving their residence to Spain who meet the Traslado de Residencia conditions pay 0%.
